The Prayer Cloth That Never Left Her Side: An Oasis Hospice Story

At Oasis Hospice, we are often entrusted with moments that leave a lasting imprint on the heart—simple, sacred exchanges that carry love far beyond the bedside. Sometimes the smallest gifts become lifelong reminders of purpose, comfort, and quiet strength.
Recently, RN Case Manager Carolyn shared a meaningful story with our team.
Twenty-one years ago, when Carolyn first began her hospice career, her very first hospice patient, a woman named Mary, gave her a small “prayer cloth” that had been blessed by her minister. Mary and her daughter told Carolyn to always keep it with her because it would provide protection and comfort as she cared for others.
For twenty-one years, Carolyn has carried that cloth with her on every single visit.
To some, it may appear to be nothing more than a small piece of fabric tucked away in a nursing bag. But to Carolyn, it represents something much deeper—the connection between caregiver and patient, the sacred trust shared in hospice care, and the reminder that what we do matters.
Those who work in healthcare, caregiving, hospice, and support services often carry invisible treasures like this with them. Maybe it is a handwritten note, a meaningful conversation, a prayer, a hug, or words spoken during a difficult moment. These are the things that stay with us long after the visit ends.
Every one of us has likely received a special word, affirmation, or symbolic gift from someone whose life we touched—something that reminds us of the importance of our calling and the purpose behind the work we do each day.
And sometimes, we need those reminders more than ever.
The reality is that discouragement can quietly seep into our lives. Healthcare professionals, caregivers, and support staff often carry emotional burdens while continuing to show compassion and strength for others. There are moments when exhaustion sets in and we question whether we are making a difference.
But stories like Carolyn’s remind us that we are.
So today, hear again the voice of that patient, family member, coworker, or loved one who reminded you why you started. Hold tightly to the encouragement you have received along the way.
A Medicare surveyor may not understand the significance of a 21-year-old prayer cloth tucked away in a nursing bag—but Carolyn does.
At Oasis Hospice, we believe the moments shared between caregivers and patients have a way of living on far beyond what we can see. The love, comfort, and compassion given during difficult times leave lasting impressions not only on families, but on those privileged enough to care for them.
